We’re discussing stress because it’s so prevalent in society nowadays, Elena. It can de-rail us from a healthy nutrition program.
Stress is like we’re on a treadmill running through our days, still not getting enough accomplished, falling into bed, totally exhausted, then waking up the next morning, needing to tackle the to-do lists again. It’s exhausting. We find that there’s not enough down-time, and therefore, there’s no lifestyle harmony. There’s just not enough balance between, work, relaxation and sleep.
I find that people aren’t taking care of their bodies, aren’t eating healthfully, are trying to control stress by filling up on caffeine and sugar, which later creates the blood sugar blues, they aren’t drinking their adequate quota of purified water, they might not take supplements or supplement properly, and most are certainly not exercising or getting adequate rest. And because we’re so outwardly focussed, it’s amazing to see how many people know what others want, but haven’t a clue what they need for themselves. And even if they do know, most people don’t feel worthy enough to claim it for themselves, having been highly trained in their younger years to focus strictly on the needs of others.
And yet, from a health practitioner’s standpoint, there are so many tools that you can utilize in your “health tool kit” in order to keep up more easily to the demands of today’s hectic lifestyle. My intention is to help you understand how stress is affecting your life and what changes you can make to create the vibrant health that you deserve, as well as moving into a more harmonious lifestyle harmony. So tonight, I want to address the 8 critical areas necessary to create incredible health.
But first, I would like to thank you, Elena, for having me on the show, as well as all the listeners for taking their time and energy so they can learn about some strategies that can help them in their personal as well as business lives.
ELENA: How long have you been doing this work and what does it all entail?
I‘ve worked in the holistic health field since 1994, having embraced it once it helped me regain my health again after being diagnosed and bedridden with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Fibromyalgia.
So, I’ve known illness and now I know health, giving me a great deal of compassion for those struggling with physical, emotional, mental or spiritual health, as I believe they are all one. I now do a great deal of work with the mind-body connection to help clients empower themselves and to be all that they can be.
I have a great deal of eclectic education in the realm of spirituality, another passion of mine.
So, for the past 15 years, I’ve helped hundreds of Individuals, Schools and Corporations take their health to THEIR next level. After experiencing a lot of stress and unhappiness during my childhood and adult life, I became motivated to learn the techniques I needed to take control of my life. I have learned some of the most powerful strategies in how to create incredible, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. So, clients learn stress-reduction techniques, weight-normalizing strategies as well as reducing and/or eliminating fatigue and even pain.
I thoroughly love to coach those who are interested in delving into themselves, wanting more out of life, choosing to embrace health (on any level) or just wanting peace and joy in their lives. My quest is to take clients to their next level of health, whatever that means for them. Many of my7 clients are sick of the weight-loss programs and finally come to me to help them create a healthy balanced food program, along with the lifestyle harmony. They learn what their body needs for good health. It’s customized specifically for them, that’s the important part.
ELENA: How are you able to determine what their body needs?
I support them through the tools of a qualified nutritional analysis as well as an accompanying lifestyle assessment. I also support them through a high level of intuition, caring, love and accepting attitude, which is crucial to building a comfortable and safe environment for clients to thrive in.
And, you know, I have a knack for attracting clients that want to do better for themselves as we first excavate, and then as I nudge them forward towards their hopes, dreams and ultimate desires for their life.
I’ve found that a successful coaching model involves 3 elements:
a) The proper tools, strategies and the right information about your specific situations, lifestyle, etc.
b) A proven program that works!
c) And ongoing support, so that you have an accountability partner as well as your own cheering section; in other words, motivation to do what you said you wanted to do.
So, I couple this coaching model with helping clients create their unique “Ultimate Lifestyle Harmony”.
You see, we operate from 4 parts of our Being:
a) We have a Higher Conscious Mind our God connection; (spiritual)
b) We have our Conscious Mind, which talks & reasons; (intellectual)
c) We have our Unconscious Mind , which drives our actions, holds our habits & programming & belief systems; also runs our body; (emotional)
d) And our Body; which is about action & results, and of course, that’s our physical realm.
Here we have the 4 realms of our being: physical, emotional, mental & spiritual. Now, did you notice that I listed the physical body last, because that truly is just the results of our 3 invisible realms?
So, it’s a fascinating process, first to instruct and then to mirror my client’s unconscious beliefs back to them. It’s also to continuously train their mental focus to lock onto new beliefs and realities.
ELENA: You have quite a background to cover. I think it’s important for the callers to understand what you’ve been through in your life, because it shows hope that they can heal and overcome whatever is going on in their life as well. And I’m sure we all know someone who may be suffering from one of the points that Mary’s going to address.
Mary-Anne, can you tell us about your history and what motivated you to want to work with health as well as coaching?
Well, I’ve learned so much on this subject due to the life that I’ve lived, and just desperately wanting a better way.
- I’m one of the 80% of people who were raised in a dysfunctional family. Generally this sets us up into learning ways to cope and for me it was stuffing my feelings and keeping them all bottled up, a very common syndrome, and I have to admit, especially for women. I was taught that I was” just a girl” and therefore I didn’t have the right to have a voice. So I learned to use food as my source of comfort and stress reducer. For others, they may use alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, sex or work to stuff or ignore their feelings. The bottom line is that many people feel unfulfilled and will continue to do so until they go through the work to root it out, let it go and then begin living their own life based on their value systems. Oh, and I used to smoke during my teenage years. So I fully understand the smokescreen I put up for myself so I didn’t have to see the dysfunction so clearly.
- I experienced post-traumatic stress disorder as well. Many people end up with post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of some form of abuse early in their life. I can assist people in learning to “live in the now” and gently release the past.
- Emotional abuse was also a factor for me. Emotional abuse is a major epidemic in our culture, and this is one of the pieces of reclaiming health that most people don’t see as contributing to their stress levels, whether it’s currently an issue or whether was an issue in their past. Feeling suppressed by others is emotionally damaging. Many abusive relationships are subtle, like passive-aggressiveness, and some are not so subtle, but it’s important to bring it to the light of day to begin the healing process. It’s an area that I know well, so I can help others find emotional health, empowerment and balance about that issue as well.
- So then, after all that, in 1992, I ended up bedridden with a disabling condition that left me helpless to care for myself, much less my children. I suffered a great deal of pain and fatigue. I was eventually diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. During this time, and after 2 years of searching, I found a potpourri of answers that changed my health and my life. I learned that healing isn’t a one-stop visit, but it’s a process. It’s also the best fulfilling “work” you can do for yourself as you reclaim your life.
So, after seeing 11 Doctors and Specialists who couldn’t help me and basically told me to learn to cope with it, I began to understand that I had to take control of my own health. My mother used to say that if you don’t have your health, than you don’t have anything, because health matters most. And I came to understand the hard way that she was right.
If you’re counting, I’ve dealt with 4 major stressors, of which any one of them can greatly affect your health. Don’t feel that if you’re dealing with one or two of these scenarios, that you can just brush it off and say that you can easily deal with it yourself. I believe that you’re worth getting the help you need; and most people just can’t go it alone.
So, I learned many strategies for myself, that I incorporated into my new healthy lifestyle that literally “saved my life”, physically and emotionally; and some of these are the health strategies that you’re going to learn about tonight.
ELENA: Can you tell us what steps you took?
The first step on my journey to becoming stress-free was to study physical health in the area of food and nutritionals. This was an in-depth program that changed how I ate and also how I thought about food. I realized that what I put on the end of my fork was either going to take me closer to health or further away from it. And I, like many people, had always thought that ate healthy. But, as a young child, with my Dutch background of chocolate or cheese sandwiches on white bread caught up with me. And I was given milk right at birth, so that set me up for health problems right away, although it wasn’t diagnosed until much later.
Once I got a handle on my eating habits, I then added in Reiki. Reiki is a means of de-stressing that comes from the eastern culture and is a one-hour treatment where you lie on a massage bed while I, as a practitioner, place my hands on certain areas that release stress as the energy centres balance. I first learned to do this for myself, which is called Level I, and it helped a lot. I then went on to get all the Reiki levels so that I could give treatments to others, and now also teach students to become Reiki Masters. Of course, most clients just come in for a treatment, and I couple it with a therapeutic mattress called Quantum Healing Treatment. This is a specially designed mattress, which includes amethyst crystals, negative ions and far infrared therapy. It was designed for NASA when the astronauts were out in space, and is said to heal on all levels; so, physically, mentally, emotionally & spiritually. It’s actually quite remarkable. Most people just don’t want to get up off the Reiki table once the session is complete. I always say that it feels like a warm incredibly loving hug from God.
You know,, I’ve always been intrigued by the power of the mind and our emotional journey’s, so I studied it first from a personal interest and then from a client point of view. From there, I added in a coaching program to work more effectively with my clients thought processes, emotions, their chattering monkey mind and especially their sabotage patterns. So I did my own healing work and then began to help clients work through their own healing journeys with whatever issues they presented with. So, that’s my life in a nutshell.
And you know, from all that, I now totally get that this is my mission as well as my passion in life. I’m all about raising people’s health and energy on all levels. My mission is to affect the lives of 10 Million people through nutrition and lifestyle harmony. ELENA: So, now tell us more about the effects of stress.
Research has clearly proven that constant stress on our minds and bodies certainly take its toll.
- Stress lowers your immune system and that’s when you could become sick more easily
- Headaches are generally stress-related
- Stress increases the risk of heart disease
- How many people feel fatigued, such as experiencing the mid-afternoon slump? Many times, that’s all about stress.
- How many people can’t relax when they finally have some downtime? That’s about being all keyed up for too long and not knowing how to let it go
- And, are you aware that stress produces non-restorative sleep
- Do you know that research indicates that most trips to the Doctor are stress-related?
- And finally, it also aggravates our weight as well as our addictive behaviours. That’s where my speciality of knowing the mind-body connection helps people get off the weight-loss treadmill and build a healthy lifestyle. It’s crucial to healing. So, it’s important in my work to help clients get a hold on their stress levels. It’s all inter-connected.
Here’s some more data:
1 in 2 people get diagnosed with one form of cancer or another.
And yet, heart disease is still the # 1 disease in North America
Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in North America. Over 90% of the people have Type II diabetes, which is treated by diet and exercise.
Then there’s obesity: 1 in 3 North American’s are obese: 15% are children and another 15% are adolescents. There is a direct correlation between obesity and heart disease, diabetes and many of our other well-known North American diseases.
In the U.S., it’s indicated that obesity costs 10% of the health care bills. It’s a $150 Billion Dollar problem. It also set to double in 10 years, up to $300 Billion Dollars annually. That’s staggering. And the sad part of it all is that, it’s preventable
The newest research indicates that our children will have a life expectancy of 10 years LESS than ours, as their parents. We have a responsible to live as healthy as possible, in order to get our children healthy. We’re their teachers.
Also, most marriages fail due to a lack of communication or financial struggles; problems that are generally also tied into stress.
Does anyone listening find that they either understand at least one of these patterns that I’ve discussed so far tonight, or know a loved one that does? You know, Elena, I’ll bet pretty much everybody listening can answer yes to that.
ELENA: (Please agree)
So tonight, I want to address the 8 critical areas necessary to create incredible health. I have studied integrative learning which means that the more you participate, the more ingrained the information becomes and therefore the more you will learn and remember. So, you may want to take notes, or if I ask a question, you might answer it in your head. This keeps you engaged. Some people actually answer out loud, even though they’re on mute. That’s O.K., even encouraged.
ELENA: So, is this where our listeners get the opportunity to do an exercise and learn about themselves?
Yes it is. I’d like for everyone to find an 8 ½ x 11” blank piece of paper. First draw a large circle on your paper, one that encompasses as much of the page as possible. Then, draw a line down the middle, from top to bottom, inside the circle. Next, draw a line from left to right, also inside the circle. Finally, draw 2 diagonal lines so that when it’s complete, it looks like a pie with 8 slices.
We’re going to use this pie to create your Wheel of Life. So, let’s see the outside circle as a 10 as far as ideal, or optimal would be. The center of the spoke, would be a 1. Now, a one would be poor, and remember that 10 is optimal, awesome, ideal; you get it, right?
I’m going to go around the wheel tonight and teach you the 8 pieces of Ultimate Lifestyle Harmony that I believe are most beneficial in creating the healthy powerful awesome life that you’re looking for.
So, here are the first of the 8 components of health that I have found invaluable:
The first area that I’d like to discuss is PHYSICAL health, because that’s always the crucial first step. Don’t do anything with your pie yet, until I’ve explained the first piece, and then you’ll have a more accurate idea of what number to place inside each quadrant.
Dr. Ben Johnson, Physician, Author and Leader in Energy Healing: “We’ve got a thousand different diagnoses and diseases out there. They’re just the weak link. They’re all the result of one thing: stress. If you put enough stress on the chain and you put enough stress on the system, then one of the links breaks.”
We have 60 trillion cells, which regenerates approximately every 8 years, depending on the organs involved. Your immune system is your # 1 defence against disease. And since stress and disease is flourishing, I think it’s easy to say that our immune systems are letting us down.”
And it’s so true.
Quadrant # 1: Food; fuel yourself on life-giving foods that nourish your body We need 90 nutrients every day to survive and thrive; 60 of them are minerals while the other 30 are vitamins, amino acids and essential fatty acids. We’re not going to get sufficient good-quality nutrients in boxes, cans or in fast-food restaurants; we’re just not.
You need to consume nutrient vs. anti-nutrient foods. If nature made it and man didn’t mess with it, you’re off to a good start. You may still need to sort out some food sensitivities, but eating from nature is the obvious first choice.
Eat foods that have life! I had a student living with me who was from China. He used to put a fresh orange on his night table beside his bed. And when I questioned him about it, he said that it had “life force”, so it was healthy to have it beside his head as he slept; you know, brain power. I offered to buy him a plant and he was thrilled. So, that’s a unique way of looking at life force, but it drives home a point. We all know that fruit is better for you than coffee shop breakfasts and all the sugar that contains. A well-balanced food program that’s designed uniquely for what your body needs’, is one of the most important steps you can take in getting your health into an optimal state. And I know that there are a multitude of philosophies; raw, Ayurvedic, Blood-type; I’ve studied them all.
So, now, back to your Wheel of Life. Decide first on a scale of 1 – 10, how well your life is working in this area. If you decide it’s a 5, take the first quadrant and draw a new inside circle within the circle about half-way in. If you were to decide it’s a 2, you would draw a small semi-circle very close to the spoke. And if it’s an 8, you’d draw a new semi-circle fairly close to the outside of the current wheel rim. Make sense? O.K. Awesome. Does it make sense to you, Elena?
Quadrant # 2: Drink Purified Water; there is so much controversy but the general theme that everyone understands is 8-10 glasses a day is necessary to remove the poisons in your body that accumulates from daily living. It also keeps your liver functioning optimally. I personally believe in and use Reverse Osmosis water.
How would you rate this quadrant on a scale of 1-10? Give it a number and then draw a new semi-circle inside the current wheel to show more accurately where you’re at.
Quadrant # 3: Supplements are crucial to a healthy lifestyle, as we’re just not getting the proper sufficient nutrients from our foods. Many are loaded with fillers and excipients.
Here’s a great example of the insufficient nutrients we get from foods nowadays. Spinach is a great source of iron. Research was compiled in 1953 and again in 1997. It was then established that you needed 43 bowls of spinach in 1997 to equal 1 bowl in 1953. The land has been demineralised through commercialization over the years and here was the proof.
If the minerals aren’t in the soil and if we can’t properly digest and assimilate our foods unless we have all minerals in our system, how can we expect to be healthy and live a long vibrant life? So, get on a good quality vitamin/mineral supplement. And if there’s any health issue, understand that your glutathione levels are probably low. Science now understands that the more ill a person is, the lower their glutathione levels are. How would you rate this quadrant on a scale of 1-10? Give it a number and then draw a new semi-circle inside the current wheel. Are you on a high quality vitamin/mineral supplement? I believe in organic cold-pressed vitamins and minerals, because then I know that the person is actually getting the nutrients that they’re paying for.
Quadrant # 4: Fitness; move your body for 30 minutes a day to also help release the poisons. Give your mind an inner workout as well by doing mindful exercise, calming your mind at the same time as calming your body. Use a soothing affirmation.
The lymph system are compiled of many little storage sacs that accumulate the toxins that are ready to leave your body. All they need is that up and down motion of walking, rebounding, jumping; anything that allows these small pools to move the sludge out of your system. Lymph cancer is so prevalent because many North Americans are not just making the time to exercise.
Make it fun! Sunshine therapy is so important in order to get sufficient Vitamin D, yet if you live in North America, statistics indicate that we’re not getting enough.

Quadrant # 5: Restful Healing Sleep is how your body heals. Any less than 7 hours is counter-productive to your health. Actually, research also indicates that between 7 ½ to 8 hours of sleep is when your short-term memory moves into long-term memory, so that’s important to work with. Hormones begin to regulate between 11:00 pm and 2:00 am, so that’s why they always say that going to bed early makes you healthy, wealthy and wise. And even if you can’t sleep, rest is the next best thing. Train your body to relax and unwind and eventually, hopefully, you’ll start to sleep more effectively.

ELENA: Wow, Mary-Anne. I’ll bet everyone is learning ALOT about themselves. And more than half of the chart is only the physical part of ourselves. What steps will complete the Wheel?
That’s right, Elena. The first 5 components to great health are in the physical realm. Only the physical part of us is visible; obviously, however, the other 3 really run the show.
Now let’s talk about endorphins, which are your feel-good hormones. John Gray states that excessive working and drinking on Mars (men) and excessive giving and eating on Venus (women) are the most common symptoms of low endorphin production. So now, here’s where physical and emotional connections meet.
Quadrant # 6 on your wheel is our EMOTIONAL health:
Our emotions run our life; thank goodness. They’re actually an indicator of how we’re doing, whether we’re listening to our highest calling, whether we’re sabotaging, whether we’re violating our values and principles or whether others are violating our values.
Our 2nd brain is in our gut, which is why when we talk about things like “I had a gut feeling” or “My stomach just started doing flips”, or “I just felt “off”; you know what I mean, Elena? (Pause) There’s literally a connection between the brain in our head and the brain in our gut. I find this most fascinating.
Another thing when it comes to emotions, most of us tend to live in the past or in the future. Many of us aren’t even here in present time. We’re obsessing about the future, or living in fear of the unknown; or we’re stuck in the past with perhaps living out our parents expectations, or feeling stuck because of unworthy programming or experiences we’ve received in our younger years.
Our emotions come in two forms; ones that make us feel good and ones that don’t. You know the happy optimistic people who have emotions that are uplifting and you want to be around them. They believe that their cup is half-full. Life is wonderful or going to be. Every experience is good, etc. etc.
Then there are others who’s cup is always half-empty. Life sucks, everybody’s out to get ‘em. Nothing is ever right. I’m sure we all know one or two of these people. This is where our stomach tightens when we see their name on call display and don’t even want to pick up the phone, right?
You know, another way of looking at it, is with expansion versus contraction. I do muscle-testing and see clearly how our aura expands when our emotions are happy, when we’re feeling good and life feels safe. Our aura contracts when our emotions are negative, sad, depressed, and we feel pressure as our aura clings more tightly to our bodies, instead of having that light expansiveness about it.
If you’re around a toxic person, you may have a decision to make. Do you need to change your situation or just change what you’re telling yourself about your situation? You have to become an inner environmentalist and pay attention to your emotions, along with what got you there to that emotion. Learn to expand on the feel-good emotions and learn to avoid the not-so-good emotions by making whatever lifestyle changes you need to, in order to get your life truly working for you.

Quadrant # 7 is our MENTAL health:
This obviously meshes nicely with our emotional health. They work together, however, you’ll notice that our emotions are based on what thoughts created it. This is noted so aptly with children who came from the same household; one excelled and one became the troublemaker. When asking them why their life was the way it was, they said it was because of their childhood. Same parents, same circumstances, different habits of thinking. Interesting, isn’t it?
So, what we create in our life is guided by our thoughts; it’s that simple. The research indicates that we think about 60,000 thoughts daily; and of those, 45,000 of them are negative. Wow. Is that because we think the same thing today that we thought yesterday, and the day before that and the day before that? Absolutely. Unless we do the work to create different brain patterns, which would create different and better results in our life.
I believe the power of the spoken word is “everything”. What we say goes back to what we think and that creates our life. So, I’d like to add that I also believe that “every thought is a prayer”. Everything we think goes out into the Universe and helps create the circumstances, the people, the environment that creates the next phase of our life. It’s just that simple. And then, the law of attraction guides us, because we are like magnets.
Minister Joel Osteen says that “Words are like seeds. They can take root and grow in a person’s mind for years.” And on the opposite extreme, Hitler said “Give me a child for 7 years and I’ll have him for a lifetime.” Many people who grew up in emotionally disruptive households know what I mean because it’s like their parents are still ruling their lives and their heads, controlling them, even years after the parents have passed on. That’s why I believe it’s crucial to do the emotional and mental work to clear up past trauma’s and get back into present time on all levels.
So, it’s having the right mindset and applying the right processes, that creates results, not just having the right information.
So now, how would you rate this quadrant on a scale of 1-10? Give it a number and then draw a new semi-circle inside the current wheel.
- Finally, there is the most important component of creating a stress-free life and living in ultimate lifestyle harmony; our SPIRITUAL nature.
This is not a religion; it’s an energy power source that lives within each of us, and we all have access to it. Some people may have practiced more and are more in touch with our spirituality, but it’s WHO WE ARE.
This is our intuition, which lives in our heart and in our gut. Our soul is also in our gut, along with our 2nd brain. More aptly put, our soul is in our solar plexus, which is in the upper part of our stomach.
And know that the soul is always right. When we listen to our intuition, which is so connected to our soul, we’ll always be right.
On the planet, we are connected; we are all one, with every single person. When we send out good thoughts to someone, it actually goes out all around the planet to everyone else thinking good thoughts and you as the receiver, get all those good thoughts. And if you’re thinking a negative thought to someone, that too goes out all around the planet to everyone and you get blasted with all of those negative thoughts. So, to learn to stay calm and balanced and connected, perhaps learn to meditate.
Just like it’s important to have a shower every day to be clean, it’s important to meditate on a daily basis. It’s like filling your spiritual gas tank. It needs replenishing on a regular basis.
Give your mind an inner work-out as well by doing a mindful exercise, calming your mind and at the same time as calming your body. Use a soothing meditation. Remember to use it as a 411 program, not a 911 program. A good saying to reflect on is this:
Remember: “It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.”
Now that you’ve been around the wheel putting in your current lifestyle, how round is your wheel? Would it hurt your backside to ride around on it in its given situation? For most people, they would say yes.
ELENA: You have an amazing offer for our guests that’s never been offered before?
I mean, do I think we can we permanently eliminate stress from our lives? No, probably not.
But there are many things that we can do to decrease our stress levels and take control of our life, right? We’ve briefly touched on many of them tonight.
So, what’s the next logical step? Well, would it be valuable to understand what your body personally needs to be stress-free-for-life because you’ll have a multitude of tools in your health toolbox? Sure, right. Step 1 would be taking care of the first 5 components of the Stress-Free-For-Life strategies.
