Achieving Your Goals: Steps to Success

“A goal without a plan is just a wish” – Antoine de Saint-Exupery

We’re coming up to one month into the New Year, so how are your goals for 2014 coming along? If you are doing well then good on you, but if you’ve already fallen off the wagon, it’s not too late to turn it around! The vast majority of New Year’s ‘resolutions’ fail because there is not a definite plan behind them. You may have a vague idea that you’d like to lose weight, but without a step-by-step plan, how do you know what you’re going to do to achieve that?

The key to success is to start out by making specific goals that are achievable and time-based. For example, you goal might be; “to lose 10 pounds by March 31st”. Losing 10 pounds over that time period is achievable and it’s giving you a specific amount to aim for by a set date, so you can easily track your progress. From there, you make your plan for how you’re going to get there, for example; “run 5 miles three times a week” or “follow the paleo diet beginning January 10th”.

Achieve Your Goals

Don’t forget when making your plan to include any known obstacles and how you plan to get by them. For example, continuing with the weight-loss goal, include any known events in your plan that might interfere with your healthy diet. Going to a party? Eat some of your healthy food beforehand to reduce the risk of munching on high-calorie snacks and opt for a lower calorie beverage.

Apart from having a good plan, research shows that having the support of others is a great way to ensure you stay on track. Get others to join you or just let someone close to you who will be supportive know what you are trying to achieve. Telling others can add that extra motivation to get things done.

If you either haven’t set goals yet or have already ‘broken’ resolutions, I challenge you to start over right now, set some specific, measurable, achievable, time-bound goals and put in place a plan to achieve them. There is nothing to say that January 1st is the only time to make and stick to goals, get yours set right now and be on the path to success in 2014.
